[ 2026.02.07 ]

The United Mexican States (in Spanish: Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos, in English: The United Mexican States), commonly referred to as "Mexico", has a territory of 196,440 square kilometers. It is the third largest country in Latin America, ranking 14th in the world. It is located in the southern part of North America, at the northwest end of Latin America. The country is divided into 32 states (the capital, Mexico City, has been changed from a federal district to a state), and each state has municipalities (towns) and villages. The capital is Mexico City. In 2024, the total population of Mexico was 131 million.

Mexico is one of the centers of ancient Indian cultures on the American continent. It became a Spanish colony in 1521.  After the Mexican War of Independence in 1821, the first Mexican Empire was established. In 1823, it was overthrown by a military coup. In 1824, the Mexican Federation was established. In 1848, after the Mexican-American War, it was forced to cede nearly one-third of its territory in the north to the United States.  In 1863, the Second Mexican Empire was established with the support of France. In 1910, the Mexican Revolution broke out, overthrowing the dictatorship and ultimately leading to the formulation of the 1917 Constitution and the establishment of the current political system.

Mexico is a federal constitutional republic and a country with representative democratic institutions, possessing a strong industrial base and an export-oriented agricultural sector.
